Laurus Summer Camp - Covid 19 Procedures

Check In

Once campers have clearance to attend camp they will be grouped according to age and must stay within these groups for the remainder of their time at camp.
Parents will be asked to maintain a 2-meter distance at all times when in the check-in line. Markings on the floor will indicate the appropriate distancing.
Counsellors will be required to wear masks, gloves and protective eyewear while checking parents in.
Once a camper has finalized the check-in process, parent has provided camp with a signed pre-screening document and parent has been provided security code, campers will be brought to their designated group and designated area.
Camper’s group will adhere to a 1:5 counsellor (1:4 for Juniors as per Sante Quebec directives) to camper ratio and will have no more than 10 campers total at any time in designated check-in area.
Campers will be given mandatory check-in windows in order to minimize the amount of people at check-in or check out. (Most likely by surname.)
Parents who do not adhere with check-in/out regulations will be warned, and if the infraction occurs again they will be asked to leave.
Signs will be installed at the check-in/out areas to remind staff, campers and parents of the regulations and procedures in place.
Every camper and employee’s temperature will be taken every morning before they are granted permission to enter the premises. A record will be kept of the temperature recordings.

Communications

Prior to Camp:

Prepare and distribute documentation containing rules and guidelines for campers to follow during their time at camp, along with the consequences and procedures for when the rules are not followed.
Be familiar with answers to frequently asked questions and common misconceptions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Identify which campers are at higher risk for complications related to COVID-19, and encourage and support them in taking additional precautionary measures including consultation with their healthcare provider. Campers who are immunocompromised should reconsider attending this year, we can give credit for 2021.
Provide information on any communication platforms, such as websites, automated text messaging, and telephone hotlines, to distribute information to campers.
Ensure that parents have understood the information being sent to them by having either online or phone interaction.

During Camp:

Laurus staff members are currently coming up with programming in accordance with the guidelines for camps and the childcare sector provided by the government of Quebec, the ACQ and CNESST. This programming takes into consideration distancing, sanitization standards, ratio directives, logistics of applying regulations and procedures such as:
○ Hand washing (when entering and leaving the building, at every transition, before and after meals, in regular intervals, in case of contact and in the event of coughing, sneezing, etc.)
○ Distancing - minimum 2m between all children and staff (one direction hallways,
max 10 people in a room, reduced ratios, sectioning off larger areas (outdoors,
for example) for different groups, markings on floors and tables, activities that
eliminate the occurrence of children coming into close contact)
○ Limiting supplies - to reduce the risk of spreading we are avoiding activities
where children have to share materials. If materials are shared, they are
washed/disinfected between each use. We are avoiding the use of porous materials such as paper, blankets, plush toys, etc., as they are difficult to
disinfect. Ideally, when materials are absolutely required, each child will have
their own set of particular materials kept in a plastic bag or bin, to be sanitized
daily.
○ Schedules are being made with time for disinfection of the site and materials in
between use from each group (i.e. after a group uses the gymnasium it is
completely cleaned, including benches, walls, door handles, balls, etc.)
○ Activities are being planned knowing that we will no longer have common
spaces, group changes or entire camp gatherings.
Employees will be provided with personal protective equipment (PPE), as required by CNESST, including gloves, masks and protective eyewear, In addition to this an emergency COVID kit containing previously mentioned PPE in addition to a protective gown.
Employees who need to come into close contact with young children will follow the protocol listed on the CNESST document Workplace Sanitary Standards Guide for Childcare Services - COVID-19, page 4.
Employees and campers will be required to have extra clothes at camp in case of
contact with someone displaying associated symptoms.
There will be a designated isolation room for people who are identified as symptomatic, as well as a designated employee responsible for caring for these individuals. This is the on site health care specialist.
There will be a large supply of cleaning supplies and disinfectant (anticipated about 2x usage over a normal summer) at camp at all times. Designated staff members will ensure the cleanliness and sanitation of all facilities.
The daily schedule will be adjusted and staggered so as to reduce the interaction
between groups. In addition to this, children and counsellors will not be permitted to change groups. We will not be having campers change groups for STA.
Hygiene posters will be placed throughout the building with instructions for hand
washing, respiratory etiquette, distancing, PPE use, etc. CNESST and the Quebec
government have several of these posters available, the rest will be supplied by Laurus.
Parents and visitors will not enter the site. check-in/out will be at the sidewalk and campers will be brought in and out of the building by designated staff members wearing PPE.

There will be a maximum number of campers allowed in the building at once, to be set once we have more information from the government (otherwise likely 100 campers and 20-30 staff)
All non essential items will be removed from classrooms to be occupied by campers. They will be stored in a safe place that will not be accessed for the duration of camp and then disinfected and replaced at the end of the summer.
Non essential common spaces will be eliminated, including the staff room. Employees will be expected to keep their belongings in a backpack or within a designated area of their group’s classroom.
Laurus will follow at all times a minimum counsellor:camper ratio within groups (i.e. only counting the counsellors with the group) of:
○ 1 to 4 for 3 and 4 year olds
○ 1 to 5 for 5 and 6 year olds
○ 1 to 7 for 7 and 8 year olds
○ 1 to 9 for 9 years and over
For juniors taking naps, they will be placed 2m apart, head to toe to reduce the risk of contamination.
In every instance possible, outdoor activities will be favoured to reduce the risk of
contamination and spread of disease.
If any item at camp is to be distributed (emergency snacks, materials, etc.) they are to be touched only by one staff member, wearing PPE. This staff member must then dispose of their PPE and wash their hands, as per CNESST Workplace Sanitary Standards Guide for Childcare Services - COVID-19, page 4.
Every classroom will have a designated box to place items that need to be sanitized. The sanitized items will either be placed in a “clean” box or distributed into individual camper boxes/bags.
Every classroom must contain a cleaning kit consisting of a disinfectant approved by the Canadian government, paper towel, and all purpose cleaner (interchangable with soap and water).
Whenever possible, windows and doors will be opened to increase ventilation
throughout the school.
Laurus will no longer be distributing camper reports in paper form. We are working to adapt a new electronic version of this.
As always, Laurus is a nut free facility. Snacks containing nuts/peanuts will be discarded and a designated staff member wearing PPE will provide an individually wrapped and sanitized nut free snack.
A camper or staff member presenting with symptoms or testing positive for COVID-19 will be expected to take a leave of 2 weeks. Laurus will be adapting it’s absentee and cancellation policies accordingly.
Staff absentees will be monitored closely and supplementary staff members may be brought in to account for drops in numbers.
